What to Expect as a Family CareGiver/What to expect as a CareGiver

What to Expect as a CareGiver

Hang on tight!  It's a roller coaster of emotions, conflicts, and constant changes.

  • Wouldn't it be great if we could create a CareGivers 'Crystal Ball' to look into the future and prepare ourselves for the 'unknown?'

How nice would it be to have a clearer understanding of why our parent(s) are acting and speaking the way they do to help us know what to expect, why it's happening, and how to handle it?

Wouldn't it be helpful to know how to help make this CareGiving experience less stressful and upsetting?
Well, this CareGiving journey we're all on is no 'joke,' you can expect to have, be, and do:

  • worry
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • difficulty concentrating
  • changes/decline in your parent(s)
  • changes in yourself
  • feeling guilty
  • ...and, so much more!

What are the most Common CareGiver Duties?

Consider yourself as your 'own' Assisted Living Facility!
If you've never been, I encourage you to check out a few communities to tour in your area.
This will help you to understand what they provide for their residents under their roof, keeping in mind of course, that these ALF's have all the individual departments staffed accordingly, handling everything that you will potentially be doing 'solo.'

So, here is a list of some of the departments
in Assisted Living vs. YOU a 'one-person' show:

  • Administrator
  • Financial/Banking
  • HouseKeeping/Laundry
  • Maintenance
  • Activities Director, Entertainment, Music
  • Transportation Services
  • Nursing Assistants
  • Dining Services
  • Essentially, their HealthCare Advocates

How can I provide effective CareGiving for my parent(s)?

Caring for both of my parents was by far the toughest job I ever held!  I continue to care for my mom as I write and as she declines (just as my dad's decline) my CareGiving duties change, they increase, and they require more hands-on skills.  I thought it would be a bit easier because we're a close family.  We have each other's back right?

One would think that being family makes Caring for our parent(s) easier ~ well, it certainly didn't make this our CareGiving journey any easier, in fact, it was harder.

Truthfully, and thank God!  If it weren't for my sister at the top of our Care Team list and for being on standby when I needed her I would've had to 'pay' for help!  After all, it was both parents!  There are not enough words to express, enough hours in the day, or enough sleep to go around without being 'overwhelmed' in this CareGiver role!

Six Strategies for Providing Effective CareGiving

  • effective communication
  • staying organized
  • being prepared
  • understanding their perspective
  • learning the signs & symptoms of their conditions
  • be flexible to change (you, loved one's, relationships)

Every CareGiving situation is different, every family is different having its unique set of characteristics.  Being prepared to learn and adapt your skills as you get to know your CareGiving day-to-day routines will help ensure and improve everyone's Quality of LIfe!

Remember to always be good to yourself.
We are after all doing God's work here!

I like to think of it as a 'passing of the torch' a generational investment that enriches everyone involved!
