How do I understand my loved one's perspective on being cared for? Communication is vitally important in any relationship, and in CareGiving if communication is sub-par our relationship will collapse causing incredible amounts of stress. So, get ready to increase those communication skills and improve your Quality of Life!
Understanding your loved one's viewpoint with communication, empathy, and support for their feelings in a heart-to-heart way is a vital part of our CareGiver role!
Sometimes we're so busy keeping it all together, getting tasks done, staying organized, being prepared, and running circles around them that we often need to stop and show ample amounts of compassion!
It's so important to try to understand how they must feel when you are in the middle of caring for your loved ones. There are emotional and psychological aspects of the condition(s) they face which can be just as challenging as the physical ones. Throw in a heaping cup of losing their independence...well, walk a mile in their shoes! How do you think you would feel if this were happening to you?
It's not what you say BUT how you say it! You know, we can walk 'arm-in-arm' and not see 'eye-to-eye.'
This holds true for 'every' relationship in our lives, and is quite delicate one in our CareGiver roles.
Communication is essential in all relationships:
~ parents and children ~ grandparents and grandchildren ~ siblings ~ work relationships ~ coaches and players ~ teammates...
Being mindful of how you communicate whether it's verbally, facial expressions, and/or body language. Having a compassionate approach to caring will help considerably which in turn paves a path for them in a safe environment that welcomes communication, and a chance to strengthen relationships!
As we all age, more and more Adult Children find ourselves in the role of CareGivers for our aging parent(s). There are so many changes taking place physically, emotionally, psychologically, financially, and spiritually requiring us all to communicate with empathy.
Our families also take on the changes with us. Family dynamics are in a constant state of 'changing' and that continues for at least as long as your parent(s) and/or loved ones' care requires changing. We as CareGivers are the 'monkey-in-the-middle' as we try to keep it all together consoling everyone from the youngest to the oldest of family members including ourselves!

Many of my patients in Physical Therapy including both my parents would say: This isn't the 'golden years' at all, they lied...It's the 'tarnished years.' They would recite many humorous poems and, quotes on aging, and although it can be tough, adding humor can add some comfort!

You should be fully aware that they are losing their skills and abilities that relate to what is called: Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Skills (IADL's). These are the more complex tasks that people perform every day to take care of themselves and their homes, safely, functionally, allowing them to live independently in their communities.
and,
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are basic activities related to personal care. They include bathing or showering, dressing, getting in and out of bed or a chair, walking, using the toilet, and eating. So you can imagine now what they must be feeling losing many of these 'no-brainer' skills and abilities they now need assistance with.
Our parent(s) become more resistant to change, they feel incompetent, and gradually lose their independence. Some elders actually may question whether they can afford Assisted Living just so they are not a burden to You/the Family!
Understanding what it is that our parent(s) are experiencing is essential for their ability to express themselves in a safe, comfortable environment.
