Communication and Awareness in my experience Professionally and Personally are the 'key' ingredients when it comes to Dealing with CareGiver Guilt and how to handle CareGiver Burnout.
This holds true for 'every' relationship to be healthy, functional, loving and safe.
After all, it's not 'what you say' it's 'how you say it!' Many of us have experienced this in other aras of our lives, but when it comes to CareGiver Guilt ! 'we can walk arm-in-arm' and, not 'see eye-to-eye!'
So, as CareGivers let's take a vote:
* Raise your hand if you feel guilty for not spending enough time with your parent(s), significant other, children, grandchildren
* Raise your hand if you fee guilty because your significant other is the last person to get your attention
* How about feeling guilty for not taking care of yourself, for fegetting things because everything is so hectic
* Raise your hand if you feel guilty for thinking your CareGiving role is taking time away from the you used to do and enjoy
* Raise your hand if you can relate to feeling guilty in cultures that demand silently ~ I took care of you, now you take care of me
and, probably the one we don't ever talk about but we think it:
* ...feeling guilty that life would be easier if our parent(s) and/or loved ones passed to ease the burdens

When in our CareGiver roles, the days seem to blend into one another and suddenly we begin to realize the emotional signs, the physical signs, and the mental signs of CareGiver Burnout.
Understanding when we are getting burned out we need to be mindful of keeping stress levels low by not adding any unnecessary pressure on ourselves.
It's a balancing act between 'us' and 'them' particularly when we the CareGivers and our loved ones both need attention emotionally, physically, and mentally. Burnout changes the very 'essence' of who we are. We become irritable and cranky at times without realizing it and before we know it we're deeply depressed, have an abundance of anxiety, and notice all these uncomfortable changes in ourselves.

What works for one CareGiver may not work for another and vice versa. That being said, it is a balancing act of being mindful of taking care of ourselves!
Finding ways to 'unplug' and 'recharge' as if we are one of the electronic devices we cling to from day to day. Think of it as doing 'maintenance' on your body, mind, and soul just as you do maintenance on your vehicle.
We send our vehicle for regular maintenance, oil changes, rotating tires, and tune-ups to prevent our vehicles from 'breaking down' ~ BUT, we'll put off any of the things that truly make us happy, and bring us joy so we don't 'break down. We even go a step further to justify not caring for ourselves in ways that do not serve us!
a Care for Yourself Dream Team may look like this:
~ attending support groups ~ counseling ~ attending religious/spiritual services ~ meet with friends ~ take naps ~ candles & aroma therapy ~ go for walks ~ read a good book ~ listen to music ~ exercise ~
I hope that by sharing and exchanging our experiences and informations, we can improve our Quality of Life and those we Care For and Care About!
I am grateful to serve, and support as we're all on this CareGiving journey together.
God Bless
